RAJA RAVI VARMA (1848-1906) is thought-about among the best painters within the history of Indian art. Being the fusion of European techniques with a strictly Indian sensibility, his depictions of Hindu deities (Lakshmi, Saraswati, Durga etc.) and mythology (Radha, Kadambari, Rambha, Mohini, Yashoda, Krishna, Draupadi, Damayanti,Madri, Seeta etc.) have received profound acceptance across India. Ravi Varma's style of painting played a foundational role in defining Indian imagery and left behind a brilliant legacy of academic realism.
