*Waves Breaking (1881): The glassy depths of a mounting wave and its break into foam were described by him. Monet's picture is unsettling, with rows upon rows of loose, curved strokes created with thick, pasty paint and only a strip of flatter brushstrokes to suggest the sea's horizontal expanse. Yet, as one looks closer, one notices that these abstract brushstrokes evoke the waves' never-ending motion and the way those in the foreground catch a glint of cool late afternoon light. The picture is almost absurd in its insistence of the medium's pure materiality, but it is this materiality that can persuade the viewer that solidified paint is movable and fluid for a brief instant. *CLAUDE MONET (1845-1870) is one of the world's most famous painters, well-known today for his series of serene water lilies paintings, Claude Monet was instrumental in forging an entirely new direction for the world of art & impressionism. His distinctive use of colour, vision, and conformation would have a long influence on fine art, inspiring many great artists like Van Gogh.
